Dual Faction heroes: a tiny but impactful Living Rules update

Published almost 3 years ago • 3 min read

Every quarter, we update the so-called Living Rules (here you can see all changes to date).

We introduce these changes with a golden rule in mind: we never change the printed text on cards. In other words, what you read on cards will always be true.

Last quarter the changes very many and wide because we did not have new cards or heroes to shake things up... while this quarter, there is a single tiny (but impactful) change... meet the dual faction heroes!

Dual Faction Heroes

These four heroes from the Winterdeep and Stormsear alliances are now known as Dual Faction heroes.

This is the rule that govern them:

Kumaya, Shaidrus, Vorhild and Nantaca are dual faction heroes and belong to two factions at once.

When dual faction heroes declare a worship action, they place on the stack (in any order) BOTH worship actions of their factions.

Kumaya does not own an Illusion but can move any friendly illusion on the battlefield. Being a Nupten hero, she can now be projected as well.

These four heroes were designed to be glue between factions.

After 6 months of real-world play and hundreds of battle reports submitted, we realized they were too hard to use, and probably even too weak, all things considered.

With this buff, these heroes can now independently activate both their skills (with the only exception of Kumaya that does not own an illusion. Before you ask, we did not want to introduce an illusion for Kumaya to avoid confusion and also the need to chase an upgrade pack for her in a future product release just to get the token and new hero card).

Playing these heroes will be way more fun and exciting than before. They will also fulfil better their role of connecting two factions together.
Give it a try with the upcoming clash (see below) and let us know how you find them!

Wider Ashen Pass deployment

There's actually a second update, this one about the one lane battlefield.

The solid hexes marked in the image above are the Nexus, while the outlined hexes are where you can deploy heroes during the draft.

This a change similar to what we introduced the last quarter for the 2-lane battlefield. The goal is to open up for some new lines of play, most notably melee heroes can now reach more enemy minions with just 1 action point on turn 1.

As usual, in the game modes document you can see the specific rules for all maps.

The Breach Expansion update

The Breach expansion is released in Europe and Australia/New Zealand.

In North America, we are still waiting for the pallets to arrive at our Medford warehouse. The expansions have been stuck 6 weeks in Portland now, and we are doing all we can to get this delivery as soon as possible. We will keep you updated... and thank you for your patience!

Fortunately online deliveries do not get stuck, so we added all 24 new cards to the deckbuilder.
Go check them out here and build some amazing new decks (don't forget there are also 4 new victory cards)

Two new deck guides

The newly launched strategy hub on our website keeps growing, thanks to our awesome community :)

This week, Appless has written two more deck guides for the core-bundle preset decks.

These are two pairs of decks made out of a single copy of the core bundle (that is the starter box and the four faction expansions).

They are a great starting point if you don't want to do any deckbuilding.

Join The Breach Clash

Tomorrow we are starting a new monthly clash that will be using the new cards from the last expansion.

The Monthly Clashes are the foundation of our online organized play program, as they give you a chance to play one friendly game per week.

It is free to join and you earn 225 Skytear Shards just for playing all four matches of it. At the end of the year, you can use shards to redeem accessories and OP kits.

For instance, just for playing 10 clashes, you can get tower miniatures or hero poker chips for free (shipping excluded).

Sign up for your region to facilitate scheduling across timezones:

Just register within the next 12 hours, and for a month you will receive an email each wednesday with your opponent for the week. You will then be able to schedule a time to play with them.

This is the perfect chance to get your first games of Skytear, no previous experience required!

We also have tutors available to help you get started. Just join Discord new players channel and tag the @tutor role to ping a team of ambassadors

They will be happy to give you a demo, or even tutor you for your first match of the clash.

While playing online is not as fun as playing in person, it is a great way to connect with other players/humans during this pandemic.

And don't worry... the Skytear comunity is the OPPOSITE of the toxic environment you might expect from a normal MOBA! ;)

That's all for this week... happy gaming!
Giacomo
